Overview
This is the start of a journey together. Here’s what to expect. We know skill acquisition is a process, so we’ve created a continuum of care starting with comprehensive assessments, customized treatment plans, and group or individual weekly or bi-weekly therapy.
As goal-based practitioners, we regularly assess progress and calibrate treatment to make sure each child achieves mastery as needed at school, at play, and in family interactions.
Comprehensive Assessments
Our assessments involve an in-depth interview, collection of parent and teacher questionnaires, 3 assessment sessions to be sure we see the child over a period of time, a school observation if indicated, and a follow-up parent meeting.
Treatment Plan
We create a written report summarizing our assessment findings, recommendations, and proposed therapy goals.
Parent / Caregiver Meetings
We conclude our evaluation process with a parent/caregiver meeting, reviewing the occupational therapy treatment plan to ensure that it accurately reflects your child and to collaboratively finalize goals. At your option, we can share this report with other healthcare professionals.
Therapy Sessions
Once the assessment is complete, we typically schedule sessions one to two times per week at a standing time. Parents are encouraged to join the sessions and to schedule parent support sessions at any time.
Parent Collaborative Meetings
Twice a year we schedule a parent collaborative meeting to review progress and to make adjustments to the treatment plan.
Ongoing Adjustments to Treatment
As children progress, adjustments to the treatment schedule, goals, and other recommendations are made. As children meet their individual therapy goals, they often continue to need support integrating new skills into dynamic social environments. We may recommend participation in a dyad (two children) or small group setting to facilitate generalization of skills.
Graduation
Graduation is celebrated when the child has met their goals and is ready to move into community or school-based activities successfully. Our families are always welcome back. We know that sometimes new developmental challenges pop up and a brief revisit to OT can be very helpful.
Parent Coaching
We are happy to offer help to parents and caregivers throughout this process in the form of parent coaching sessions. We love working with parents and supporting their individual evolutions in the parenting process. Parenting is never easy and when we are too close, we often lose perspective and struggle with clarity. Our parent coaches understand what you are going through, are trained to listen closely, and are able to join you on the journey to find new knowledge / skills, resources, and partnership in the process.
